Fallout: New Vegas – Continuing Impressions

There’s that curious mix of frustration and relief you get when your new toy gets its first scratch or dent.  Yes, Fallout: New Vegas has finally glitched on me in a significant way.  There’s relief, because I’ve been waiting for this to happen.  There’s frustration, because it means I can’t complete a quest.  It’s an optional quest, but it still frustrates me, as I want to complete this one.

I won’t give spoilers, but a character I need to talk to so I can complete the quest attacks me once I talk to them.  I can wander around the room, fully in their view, and get no reaction – but the moment I talk to them…

Frustrating.

As you can probably tell, I’ve now managed to put a few hours into FNV (Fallout: New Vegas) and, apart from that glitch, I’m enjoying it immensely.  One thing I love about these games is that you can tailor your character to your play-style.  One of my friends does the whole ‘Rambo’ thing, charging in wearing strong armour and wielding powerful guns.  I, on the other hand, prefer to stick to the shadows, move slowly and pick enemies off one by one.  FNV allows that neatly, as did Fallout 3.

A few things have changed from Fallout 3.  For a start, the scenery is much more interesting.  It’s not overly colourful, but it’s more than various shades of dust and rust.  There are also more ammo types for individual weapons.  You can use a standard round, or go for a hollow-point, or armour piercing.  There’s even substandard ammo, if you’re short on caps, but that causes your weapon to degrade more quickly.

Magazines (the reading type) no longer give you a permanent one point boost in the appropriate stat, but now give a larger boost, for a short amount of time.  I’m still not sure if I like this change.  I did like the idea of slowly being able to boost stats through the magazine idea in Fallout 3.  On the other hand, you can now get a brief boost for a one-off task.

The missions have been varied, with everything from ‘Fetch X of object Y’, through to finding out why cattle are dying at night.  I can’t say much about the main quest-line, as I keep being distracted – in a good way.

So I’m still playing, really enjoying it, and really wishing I didn’t have to do things like eat, sleep and work!
