DeathSpank: The Baconing – Continuing Thoughts

I’m really not sure about The Baconing anymore.  It’s not that it’s terrible, or even bad.  I just think either the idea is worn out, or perhaps this instalment doesn’t quite meet the higher standards of the first two.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still having fun, at least when I’m not playing Skyrim or Skylanders.  I just don’t think I’m having as much fun as I could be having.

Let’s go through a few things and I’ll see if I can work out where the issue is.

Regardless of  the (supposed) change in the enemy AI, the handling of battles doesn’t seem to have changed from the original two games.  At least I seem to use all the same ‘tricks’ I learned in the earlier games.

The quests are about the same as the first two; both in terms of type (fetch quests, kill x-number of things, etc) and number.  They do seem to mix them up a little more, using the humour and setting to disguise some of the quest types.

Now that I mention the setting, I’m wondering if that’s part of the issue.  The first two games had a (to me) obvious progression through the various ‘lands” within the world.  The armour too seemed to have a progression that made sense.  Here it all seems a bit slapdash, hodge-podge and other words.  At least, that’s how they feel to me.  Having said that, I’m not sure why that would be such a big deal to my enjoyment.

The lands themselves are imaginative and interesting, with lovely changes of scenery and characters for each one. For example, The Baconing‘s take on the standard Nuclear Family is brilliant.

I think I’m left with no idea why I’m not enjoying this as much.  Maybe I’ve just had too much Deathspank.  Though that would be disappointing.
