XBox 360 and HD Movies

So, I finally got around to watching Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which has been sitting on the 360 Hard Drive for a few weeks, and which I had to purchase twice.  Too busy to watch movies, right?

However, this post isn’t about that movie, but about the experience of using Zune, and more specifcally watching High Definition (HD) movies on the 360.

Firstly, my setup is an XBox 360 (Australian version) with an HDMI cable to my full HD TV, so I’m running at full resolution for these things.

Playback was mostly smooth, with the video occasionally stuttering.  It wasn’t very noticeable, but occasionally you’d notice the movement acting almost like high-speed stop-motion.  It was while watching the credits that this became very obvious, because of the constant, smooth scroll.

I’ve yet to find out what does this.  I do know I was still connected to the interwebs, as occasionally I’d be told about friends logging in or out – though the stuttering didn’t seem tied to those events.

On the whole, though, I’m happy with the quality, and now I also see why folks like Blu-Ray so much.  I might have to invest in a player.
